Andujar Cedeno, a former shortstop for the Houston Astros, died on Oct. 28, 2000, when the Mercedes he was driving collided with a truck in the Dominican Republic. He died instantly from severe head injuries. He was 31.
Cedeno played with the Astros from 1990 to 1994. He joined the Padres after 1994 as part of one of the biggest trades in baseball to that point. The trade included Ken Caminiti, Steve Finley and Derek Bell.
Cedeno had joined the Nashau Pride of the Atlantic League the previous season but was injured and did not play.
One of Cedeno’s best seasons came in 1993 with the Astros when he hit. 286 with 11 HRS and 56 RBIs. He played in 616 games in the Major Leagues. He had 47 HRs and 223 RBIs.
