Eric Gregg, who worked as a National League umpire from 1976 to 1999, died of a stroke in Philadelphia, Pa., on June 5, 2006.

Gregg worked as an umpire in eight NL games in 1976, 77 in 1977 and became a full-time umpire in 1978. He was the second African American umpire to serve in the major leagues.

Following his career in baseball, Gregg operated a bar at Philadelphia’s Veterans Stadium.
