John Humphrey Davis, nicknamed “Red”, died on April 26, 2002, at the age of 86.

His major league career was brief, just 21 games with the New York Giants in 1941, but he spent 11 years as a minor league manager for the Giants organization.

One story attributed to Davis says that the baseball contract was originally intended for his brother Robert, but when Robert decided not to sign, Red took his place.  For the first few years as a pro player, his named was listed as “Bob” Davis.
