His best season came in 1942 when he posted a 14-11 record and a 3.29 ERA in 205.1 innings pitched.He left the Red Sox to serve in the Navy during World War II and made a brief return to the team in 1946. He pitched his final game in the majors on Aug. 8, 1946.He worked as a scout, coach and special instructor for the Boston Red Sox following his career as a player.
