Click here for detailsBob MurphyDied: Aug. 3, 2004 in West Palm Beach, Fla.Bob Murphy, the original voice of the New York Mets, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004 in West Palm Beach, Fla., following a battle with lung cancer. He was 79.Murphy served as the voice of the Mets from the team’s first games in 1962 until his retirement last season. He had worked as a baseball broadcaster for 50 years and he had started with the Boston Red Sox in 1954 and moved to the Baltimore Orioles in 1960. When he joined the Mets, he teamed with Lindsay Nelson and baseball Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner on the broadcast team. That group stayed together for 17 years until Nelson left for San Francisco.He received the Ford C. Frick Award, an honor for broadcasters, during the 1994 Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
