Madeline K. “Maddy” English, a player in the former All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, died on Aug. 21, 2003 in Everett, Mass. She was 79.

According to her obituary, she played third base for the Racine Belles, a team that won the league’s championship in 1943 and in 1946.

She signed with Racine in 1943 following graduation from high school.

Her baseball career ended in 1950 and she enrolled at Boston University. Following that, she worked in education in Everett as a physical education teacher and later as a guidance counselor. A school in Everett is named after her.

She is a member of the Women in Sports Hall of Fame, the Boston University Hall of Fame and the New England Sports Museum Hall of Fame.
