Tom Cheney set a major league record by recording 21 strikeouts in a 16-inning game. The feat came on September 12, 1962, when Cheney pitched all 16 innings of Washington’s 2-1 win over Baltimore. His honor came before a sparse crowd of 4,098 at Memorial Stadium.

In May 2001, Arizona’s Randy Johnson challenged Cheney’s mark, striking out 20 in a game.

In 1960, he pitched in three games in the World Series for the Champion Pirates. In 1961, he gave up Roger Maris’ 54th home run in Maris’ record-breaking season of 61 home runs.

He was out of baseball in 1968 to serve in the military. His career was interrupted again in 1963 when he had a severe elbow injury that hastened the end of his career.

In 1962, he pitched 173.1 innings for the Senators, compiling a 7-9 record and 3.17 ERA.  The next season, he was 8-9 in 136.1 innings with a 2.71 ERA.
