Bill Abernathie pitched two innings in the major leagues during the 1952 season.  Abernathie died on Feb. 19, 2006 in Yucaipa, Calif. He was 77.

His only appearance in the major leagues came on Sept. 27, 1952. He pitched two innings for Cleveland, giving up three runs and four hits. However, he recorded a save.

He pitched in the minor leagues and served for two years in the Marine Corps, where he also played baseball.  In 1956, he pitched for San Francisco of the Pacific Coast League.

He went to work for a sheriff’s department after leaving baseball in 1957.  He retired 19 years later as a lieutenant.
