Luis Alvarado, who played in parts of 9 major league seasons, died on March 20, 2001 in Lajas, P.R.
Alvarado debuted with the Boston Red Sox in 1968 and he played his last game in the major leagues in 1977. In his career, he hit .214 with 5 home runs and 84 RBIs in 1,160 at-bats.
In 1969, he led the International League with 89 runs and 166 hits and was named the league’s MVP. He played in 6 games for the Red Sox at the end of the season.
After hitting just .224 in 59 games with the Red Sox in 1970, he found himself in a trade that send Alvarado and Mike Andrews to the Chicago White Sox for Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio.
He played in 99 games in 1971 and in 103 in 1972 for the White Sox, but didn’t hit above .216.
